The Hindi movie ‘Omkara’ drew accolades due to a number of reasons. In the admirable interpretation of human psychology, the storyline portrayed aptly the conflicts that lie within an individual as also within the political hinterland of the country. The inspired moments of coarseness display the political landscape with finesse. Its most striking portrayal, however, is related to the murky amalgamation of politics, crime and the student fraternity. It seems more like an anomaly. In the impressionable years when the value system is to be ingrained in the student community, politics without its virtues (it doesn’t have any in India) is practiced with impunity in the country.

Even in developing countries like China, waistlines are expanding in tune with the increasing tendency towards fatty foods. Aha! So far so good. But does that mean that to unclog my arteries and lessen the work for my heart, I should live on a bovine diet of an assortment of herbs/grasses, along with vomit-inducing accompaniments like celery and beet juice? Or should I go on one of those Grapefruit Diets? The Atkins Diet? What about the one that says you should eat only fat, because that melts down the fats in your body (don’t even ask me how this works, as far as recipes go, this one’s for disaster with a capital D!). Or should I just scrap all of this because science has been known to err; you know, when the greatest minds thought the world was flat, or even the fact that according to one ‘scientific’ study of Body Mass Index, celebrities like Tom Cruise and George Clooney fall in the overweight category and if that’s where I’m to be, whose complaining? Not me! Well, actually, not quite. I mean, who am I kidding. Even if these studies are wrong, I still gasp after climbing 10 steps and shopping hurts my joints as much as most men’s nerves. Some-things gotta give: Maybe start eating home-cooked meals and junk the junk? Yes. This week, I’ll give up burgers. Next week, chocolates. We’ll take it from there. But hold the semi-cooked, boiled foods for now. I’m not ready just yet.

Cough cough...

If Brazil dies, so will the world

Satellite images reveal that annually Brazil is losing about 25,000 square kilometres of tropical rainforest (equivalent to Belgium’s area). Being destroyed legally and illegally for timber, sugarcane, coffee and of late Soya beans, the loss is having severe repercussions on the ecology of the region and the world. The Amazonian region with an area of 4.1 million square kilometres, displays amazing diversity with about 40% to 50% of world’s plant and animal species. It is contended by the scientists that a single hectare of the forest may have about 300 tree species. Similarly, species of birds, freshwater fishes, mammals, reptiles and amphibians are found in abundance in the region. In recent years, vast tracts of virgin forest lands have been destroyed in the states of Matto Grosso and Para for cultivating Soya beans to meet the demands of European countries. Horrifyingly, it is estimated that for the last 25 years, forest land of the size of the American state of California has disappeared from Brazil. The Amazon is one of the biggest replenishers of oxygen to the world; the lungs of the world are going down, and fast...

Google, despite having mind boggling fame, will need to develop saleable products to grow, or even to survive

“Google’s tools certainly can’t compete on functionality, but the question is, do they have to?” says James Governor, principal analyst of London-based IT firm, Red-Monk. But wait... this isn’t a story just about Google, rather a story of consumer choices, piracy, Microsoft , and all the four letter words that go on between them. On June 6, 2006, Google beta launched its interactive spreadsheet programme. Users can dynamically share information, much like an online basic model of Microsoft Excel. It also has Writely – a word processing tool that is already in testing phase. Actually, many have declared this as the start of another epic Google versus Microsoft battle.

Railways have increasingly started making money (IIPM Editorial)

Lalu says he wants to offer more amenities to passengers, now that Railways have increasingly started making money over the last 12 months. In all, 400 railway stations are to be modernised and equipped by the end of this year, with facilities like ATMs, cyber cafes, ticket reservation through SMS, better electronic signages, and public address systems. The New Delhi railway station is one of the stations selected, and is expected to be modernised much ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. To make things easy, the Railway Board has allowed divisional managers to sanction projects up to Rs.30 lakh (up from Rs.5 lakh) & given them autonomy to select architects to modernise stations.
